The Public Option Has Support From Both Democrats & Republicans

The health insurance debate boils down to just two sides. There are those that want to protect the interests of the health insurance companies and there are those who want to protect the health of the American people.

Those on the insurance side want to kill the “public option” as they think it will create competition for the health insurance industry which will force them to actually properly care for their customers (which of course will cost them more money so their profit margins will go down.) Those on the side of the American people know that the “public option” is an absolutely essential part of health insurance reform.

Polls show that the people of the US are actually on the side of the American people (surprising, isn’t it?) Despite all of the lies that have been spread by the right wing media (such as the Fox “News” Republican Propaganda Network) most people in the US know that having more options is a good thing for them and would help to improve their quality of health insurance whether they stick with their private plan or choose the public plan.

65% of Americans support the choice of a “public option” while only 26% are opposed to it. That’s a huge margin, it’s not even close. But why isn’t it being presented that way in the media? And has Fox News ever (even once?) reported on the overwhelming support for the option of choosing a public plan?

It should be no surprise that Democratic voters support the “public option” most strongly with 81% for it with only 12% against. What’s really amazing is that there are actually Democratic Senators who are not coming out in support of something that is obviously the right thing to do and also has a huge amount of support among those who voted them into office.

What may be surprising is that even a plurality (although not quite a majority) of Republicans support the “public option.” Despite this, not a single Republican Senator seems willing to part from the party line and actually side with their constituents instead of the corporations for once. 47% of Republicans are for it, while only 42% are against.

Independent voters are also in support of the “public option” by over a 2 to 1 margin. 61% of unaffiliated voters are in favor while only 30% are against it.

This is a real test of our democracy. Who do our Senators work for? Do they work for us, or do they work for the insurance industry. We will find out with their votes on this very important issue.

Five Reasons That We Need Health Care Reform

(#1) 450 Thousand Support Health Insurance Reform.

I’ve seen a lot of interviews with doctors who complain about the problems associated with trying to get the private health insurance companies to cover the care that their patients need. Overwhelmingly doctors favor health care reform (in fact many seem to favor a “medicare for all” system even more so than the “public option.”) Who do you think we should listen to? The doctors that want to make us well or the insurance companies that just want our money?

(#2) Over 10,000 US Citizens Die Due To Lack Of Health Care Coverage Every Year.

This is a moral issue. If you are working against health care reform then you are working for the deaths of thousands of Americans. I’m sorry, there’s no polite way to put this. I don’t understand how any American can be OK with their fellow citizens dying simply because they are not rich.

(#3) To Stop Discrimination Against The Sick People & Pregnant Women.

And it’s also the civil rights issue of our times. Right now the sick and the preganant are descriminated against by health insurance companies who won’t cover them due to “pre-existing conditions.” These people need care more than anyone, and right now they are not being covered.

(#4) To Keep Growing Costs Under Control.

With the current system America spends more money on health care than any other nation in the world but with inferior results to show for it. It’s obvious that something serious (such as “the public option”) needs to be done to get health care costs under control. care] reform is too expensive. What would be too expensive is not having health care reform.

(#5) The US Ranks #37 In The World In Health Care

For a country with the massive wealth of the US it’s absolutely embarrassing that our health care system ranks so lowly and that so many of our people die due to lack of basic health care coverage. It’s obvious that what we are doing now is not working. Read these seven truths about the US health care system to get a better understanding of how screwed up what we have now is.
